Active learning is the process of instilling knowledge to students by using methods and techniques outside the scope of the tradition classroom methods. The key is to keep the students active and engaged in the process of learning, rather than passively receiving knowledge.  It is very kinesthetic, and exploratory in nature. For “lecture only” classes, it usually involves activities to reinforce or replace the traditional lecture methods of PowerPoints and presentations.  In “lab based” classes it is to supplement the demo/tasting/reproduction aspect of learning by expanding the mind and opening the channels of communication.
