Kiwano


Kiwano

The horned melon, or kiwano, or jelly melon, as it is also know, is native to southwest Africa. It is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family, which includes cucumber, zucchini, and melons. The horned melon is approximately 4 inches, by 2 inches, and weighs between a half and 1 pound. It is bright orange, and has molted yellow splotches. The brighter orange the color, the riper it is. It gets its name from the small spikes, which resemble horns. Inside the fruit, it is emerald green, with numerous soft edible seeds. It flavor is reminiscent of melon and cucumber, with lime and banana undertones. It has a sweet-tart taste. The texture inside the horned melon is like jelly. Horned melons contain vitamin C, iron, and potassium.
